Pinot Gris 2022

The tasting notes

Pinot Gris - Click to purchase

Bannockburn in Central Otago is renowned for its ability to produce small quantities of premium wines.  Domain Road's Defiance Vineyard, on Felton Road, is tucked into a sheltered valley where miners once hunted for gold.

The Wine

The fruit was hand harvested on 23rd & 25th Match 2022 from our Defiance Vineyard on Felton Road. The fruit was whole bunch pressed.  The resulting juice was cold settled for two days before racking and inoculating with selected wine yeasts to undergo fermentation in a stainless steel tank (70%) and older oak barrels (30%).  Fermentation was stopped to retain some residual sweetness.

The colour of pale lemon straw, with clear hues in the glass our Pinot Gris has a lush texture. Aromas of red apple, white peach, pear, white melon with a hint of citrus blossom are detected on the nose. This is followed by a lush, full entry of lemon curd, nashi pear, apricot and lemon zest. Excellent balance, with layers of complexity leading to a concentrated pear and citrus finish.

Food match: Enjoy with Asian cuisine, seafood, white meats or a roast vegetable tart. For a treat try it with blue cheese, pear and a drizzle of honey.

The Awards

Winestate: "Bright, light lemon/green, [this wine] is full bodied, very fresh and vibrant, with concentrated ripe peach, pear, lychee ad spice flavours, showing a distinct touch of complexity and an off-dry, very harmonious finish. A delicious mouthful, it's a drink now or cellaring proposition".

Mark Henderson (Otago Daily Times): "Attractive nose, pear, pastry dough, nutty elements, wisps of apple skin with aeration. Supple and viscous, an oily richness to this initially, the acid backbone becomes apparent later. Nice depth, brimming with flavour, a touch of residual sugar evident, a citrusy note providing contrast. Open and raring to go and could be a bit of a crowd pleaser". Very Good to Excellent.
