Bannockburn in Central Otago is renowned for its ability to produce small quantities of premium wines. Domain Road's Defiance Vineyard, on Felton Road, is tucked into a sheltered valley where miners once hunted for gold.
The fruit was hand harvested on 2nd & 6th April 2020 and whole bunch pressed before cold settling for 2 days. The resulting juice was then racked off and inoculated with selected wine yeasts to undergo fermentation in a stainless steel tank (75%) and older oak barrels (25%). The tank fermentation was stopped to retain some residual sweetness. The two portions were combined prior to bottling.
The colour of pale straw in the glass our Pinot Gris has a lush texture. Aromas of ripe pear, melon, nectarine, peach, raspberry, camarillo and feijoa are detected on the nose. These are followed by a plush entry of ripe stone fruit, nacho pear, pawpaw and citrus on the palate. Mouth filling with a full mid-palate balanced with bright mineral acidity and a long finish of pear and nectarine.
Enjoy with Asian cuisine, seafood, white meats or salad dishes.

Wine reviews:
"Taut and racy with bright-green, lime-acid edginess, salted citrus and green-skinned pear. The acidity is sweet and chewy with a lively sweetness providing balance, vibrancy and lift. An extremely long and eloquent example of gris that holds great tension all the way to the finish line." - Cuisine March 2021
"this shiny new Pinot Gris is explosively fresh, frisky .....( with)a clean crunchy finish". - Yvonne Lorkin
"An elegant Pinot Gris" - Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews.
