2020 Bannockburn Pinot Noir

Our Pinot Noir vines grow on two rare Bannockburn sites untouched by miners.  For almost 100 years fruit was grown on the Domain Road site, peaches, pears and apples originally and then apricots at a later stage. It has been said that if you can grow apricots then you can also grow great Pinot Noir and this has certainly been the case at Domain Road.  Our second vineyard, Defiance on Felton Road is considered to be one of the prime sites in this well known location.

The grapes (clones 113, 115, 943 and Abel) were hand harvested between 5th - 14th April 2020 from Defiance vineyard.  The fruit was de-stemmed into stainless steel tanks and inoculated with selected wine yeast to carry out the fermentation.  The wine was aged in French oak barriques for approximately 10 months, of which 30% was new oak.

Deep garnet in colour, with fragrant aromas of violets, blackberry, dark plum, Christmas spice and dark chocolate, with a hint of smokiness on the nose.  The palate is rich, multi-layered and concentrated with sweet dark fruits of plum, cherry and blackberry. A complex, medium bodied wine with ample fine grained tannins, leading to a long finish with a touch of minerality and understated power.

"The nose is broody and alluring, with aromas of blackberries, black cherries, interweave pine, thyme, cloves and fragrant oak elements.  Savoury tennis are fragrant and rich, adding a velvety, fine-grained grip to the mouthfeel. Balanced, lacy acidity carries the flavour to a long perfumed finish. This black-fruited Pinot Noir shows balance , strength, power and elegance and will be rewarded with short term ageing." Candice Chow.

" Complex, ripe and very new. Vibrant aromas and textures including fresh and tart raspberry, fresh plums and a fine savoury mineral frame. On the palate - delicious but very youthful with an abundance of tannins and backbone of acidity then a core of ripe red berry flavours. New oak flavours and textures, a fine savoury complexity and a clay stone mineral quality. A wine for the cellar or definitive food pairing with best drinking from 2024 through 2030+" Cameron Douglas.

"It's wonderfully fruited and enticing on the nose showing dark cherry, game, warm mushroom and roasted nut characters, leading to a concentrated palate that's refined and beautifully flowing. Splendidly structured by fine polished tannins, finishing persistent and structured. At its best: now to 2032." Sam Kim

" Interesting nose of woodsmoke, toffee apple, iron filings, tilled earth, with fruit in the wings. Real structural backbone here, powerful tannins and bright acidity, built for the future. Earth, tar, savoury notes, pencil shavings, red fruits; for all its structure there's pinosity too. Crying out for food yet drinkability too. If tannins don't outlast the fruit it could be one to watch" Mark Henderson
