2019 Bannockburn Pinot Noir

Our Pinot Noir vines grow on two rare Bannockburn sites untouched by miners.  For almost 100 years fruit was grown on the Domain Road site, peaches, pears and apples originally and then apricots at a later stage. It has been said that if you can grow apricots then you can also grow great Pinot Noir and this has certainly been the case at Domain Road.  Our second vineyard, Defiance on Felton Road is considered to be one of the prime sites in this well known location.  Our Pinot Noir vines from these two sites deliver a complexity that reflect the unique location of the vineyards.

The grapes were hand harvested between 3rd and 10th April 2019 from Domain Road and Defiance vineyards.  The fruit was de-stemmed into stainless steel tanks and inoculated with selected wine yeast to carry out the fermentation.  The wine was aged in French oak barriques for approximately 10 months, of which 30% was new oak.

Deep garnet in colour, with fragrant aromas of  blackberry, blackcurrant and ripe plum mixed with hints of clove, cinnamon and leather, on the nose.  The palate is rich and concentrated with red berry fruits, dark plums, chocolate, leather and hints of Christmas spice.  A complex concentrated wine with lovely fine grained tannins, balanced minerality and a long plum and spice finish.

"Well worth cellaring, ...Deep ruby, it is fragrant and supple, with youthful cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours showing very good ripeness and complexity, and a finely balanced, smooth finish." Winestate

"An intensely aromatic wine, heaving with wild cherry, rhubarb, reship and spice, layers leather and a hint of plum and truffle on the finish. The tannins are meaty and have delicious grip. It's stunning stuff." Yvonne Lorkin

"Aromas of black and red cherries, blackberries entwined with thyme, black pepper, vanilla and nutmeg. The fruit is perfectly ripe with good balance and concentration.....fine-grained tannin provides backbone structure and velvety mouthfeel." Candice Chow

""Wonderfully complex, youthful and varietal bouquet. Aromas of mineral laden soil and roses, red berries and cherry flesh, mild baking spice qualities of oak and hand new and old wood complexities.  Bright, fresh, and fruity with a core of raspberry, cherry and spicy plum flavours. Textures from tannins and acidity add a youthful tautness indication cellar and development time required. Lovely long finish with best drinking from 2024 through 2034." Cameron Douglas

"A powerful, beautifully poised wine, that is all about the future" . Mark Henderson, ODT

" There seems to be an extra 'something' in this producer's latest release. The rich, dark cherry and plum fruit is wrapped in an edgy, textural tannic spine that offsets the fruit in a very appealing way".  Jane Skilton
