Defiance Vineyard

Defiance Vineyard on Felton Road was developed in 2012 and had its first small harvest in 2015.

The land on which the vineyard sits had never been mined or used for a vineyard before although it is one of the best sites along what is probably Central Otago's most famous wine growing road. After extensive test pits were dug to map the soils and gravels we planted out a range of wines that we feel best compliment both Domain Road and the Defiance site.

Most of the Defiance site has a layer of good quality loam soils overlaying a considerable depth of schist gravels laid down some 450,000 years ago by glaciation. A small corner of the vineyard has clay based soils similar to Domain Road's pipeclay soils.

Fiona and her team have been carefully training the vines to bring them towards full production, expected to happen in 2017.

Defiance vineyard, 7.5 hectares planted, produces;

  • Pinot Noir
  • Chardonnay
  • Pinot Gris
  • Riesling
  • Sauvignon Blanc
