Domain Road has two vineyards in the heart of the historic gold mining area of Bannockburn.  Domain Road Vineyard covers most of the north-facing valley on the upper terraces above the Kawarau River with Defiance Vineyard on a gently sloping, north facing site on Felton Road.

Our Sauvignon Blanc vines are planted in three locations, on the top of Templers Hill, an area left untouched by 19th century gold miners, on Doctors Flat where mining has exposed mineral-rich clays from a 8-15 million year old lake bed and on a corner of Defiance with clay based soils.

The wine

The grapes were hand harvested on 7th April 2021 from Defiance vineyard. The fruit was whole bunch pressed to tank and the juice cold settled for two days before racking and inoculation with selected yeast. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks (35%) with the balance (65%) undergoing barrel fermentation in French oak barriques (one new barrel).  The barrel portion was lees stirred weekly to help give the wine volume, roundness and complexity.

The colour of pale lemon, our Sauvignon Blanc is dry in style, complex and mouth filling.  Fragrant on the nose with passionfruit, guava, nectarine, toffee and a hint of citrus.  Sweet tangelo, passionfruit, apricot, melon, gooseberry and nettle, with a hint of flint, are evident on the palate. A full mid palate and bright acidity lead to a long complex citrus and tropical finish.

Suggested food matches: Fish, seafood, white meats and salads. Goats cheese on toast, just warmed under the grill.

"a vibrant Sauvignon Blanc with intense tropical fruit and spice, creamy lees complexity and an electric acid line" Candice Chow

" A complex and intriguing bouquet with aromas of fresh Meyer lemon and apple, white fleshed stone fruits and a fine lees layer folds in suggestions of spice and baked goods. Delicious on the palate with an excellent balance between textures and flavours, acidity and weight. Flavours of citrus and hay, tree and green herbs. Great drinking from 2022 through 2027". Cameron Douglas
