Harvest 2017 (2) - 29 Mar 17

Domain Road Vineyard - Harvest 2017 (2) -

Despite overnight rain the harvest got under way on Monday as hoped with the picking of the Pinot Gris - clone 457 first up!

It is not quite as hard as it looks - although wet nets would not be so good!

The trusty Bedford truck (Graeme's pride and joy) takes the first load into the winery!!

- the gateway to Defiance

Day two saw the start of the Pinot Noir from Defiance (clone 943) destined for our single vineyard Defiance Pinot Noir 2017!!

Our team of pickers represents many nationalities - including Marie from Japan!

Harvest 2017 - 26 Mar 17

Domain Road Vineyard - Harvest 2017 -

Under the blue skies of Bannockburn the 2017 harvest is set to begin. The bins and tractors are all lined up ready and we start on the Pinot Gris tomorrow, keep an eye on our blog page to follow our progress over the coming weeks.

News from abroad: Two of our wines have recently received vey good reviews one in The Spectator an English publication and the other in Wine Spectator in the USA. Jonathan Ray writing in The Spectator had this to say "The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, Domain Road, is from Central Otago rather than Marlborough and thus something of a rarity. I loved the vibrant gooseberry fruit on both nose and palate, the passionfruit and whispers of lemon zest. It's far from an over-the-top fruit bomb, though, and is soft and creamy with a long dry finish". We were given this information by an English visitor to the Cellar Door, who visited us because of the article and who had carried a copy of it all the way to NZ to show us. Thank you!!

The Wine Spectator did a review of the 2014 Duffers Creek Riesling - scoring it 91 points (which delighted our American importers!) and had this to say "succulent and juicy, with pear, peach and heady lanolin flavours. A grace note of lemon curd gains momentum on the finish."

Both of these wines are available from our cellar door and through our on-line sales, if you are not able to source them locally.

Netted! - 9 Mar 17

Domain Road Vineyard - Netted! -

A hard job well done - Fiona and her team enjoyed a welcome respite when the last of the nets were on and safely tied down on both vineyards. Pictures tell the story better than words can ever do......starting in the early morning on Defiance - finishing with a welcome drink on Domain Road!

Well done team!!!

Recent success - 2 Mar 17

Domain Road Vineyard - Recent success -

A wine for the last days of summer (or whenever you please!). Our 2016 Pinot Noir Rosé has recently scored its second gold medal - this time in the 2017 Royal Easter Show. We think it is a delicious wine but self praise being no recommendation we thought it best if we let other people sing its praises. Mark Henderson who writes the wine review pages for the ODT rated it excellent to outstanding and had this to say " Quite juicy nose, bright and lifted, peaches and cream with strawberries, developing rose petals over time. Powerful yet nicely balanced palate full of summer fruits, with lovely mouthfeel. A lip smacking quality and an excellent finish".

You can purchase this delectable wine on-line, at our Cellar Door in Felton Road or possibly at a wine shop near you!!

Mention of the last days of summer turns thought to the pending harvest - with the fruit well into veraison Fiona and her team have been busy get the vineyards under nets (birds are pesky things!). Bringing the nets out of storage are an early indicator of harvest approaching.

Getting ready to roll on Domain Road and the nets on our faithful old truck ready to be transported to Defiance from Domain Road.
