Boutique Bannockburn winemaker Domain Road Vineyard has been awarded a "Best in Show" for its 2009 Riesling at HOFEX, Asia’s leading food and hospitality trade show.
2009 was only the second vintage of the winery’s award-winning Riesling, which has sold out in its home market.
Domain Road owner Graeme Crosbie says the vineyard’s site is key to the number of quality wines emerging from its winery. “It’s a combination of not only the location, terroir and soils, but how we treat the vines. What’s really unusual about Domain Road is that all the wines we produce are excellent.”
When pressed as to what made Domain Road’s 2009 Riesling a hit with the Hong Kong judges, Crosbie admitted that the recession might have been a factor. “With the downturn in the economy in 2009, we decided to thin our grapes harder than normal. This meant that by harvest time only top quality fruit remained on the vines.”
While this resulted in a superb wine, only 400 cases were produced.
